Baseball, the bat-and-ball game of nine-player teams and a diamond of four bases, took shape in the north-eastern United States in the 1840s and became a national passion in Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Japan as well.

How it is played

A pitcher throws to a batter, who tries to hit the ball into fair territory and run the bases; the fielding side gets three outs per innings and a game lasts nine innings. The home-run contest is a festival form in which hitters simply try to clear the fence as often as they can.
