The crossword puzzle first appeared in a New York newspaper in 1913 and within a decade was a daily habit in Britain and America, where the cryptic style developed.

How it is played

A grid of white and black squares is filled with words running across and down, each answering a numbered clue. American grids are dense and fully interlocking; British cryptic clues hide the answer in wordplay as well as a definition.

Heritage note

Part of the living heritage of United Kingdom, United States.

Origins

Usually placed in the era of Modern Heritage (1800 to today), within the cultural world of Celtic and Atlantic Europe.
