Congklak

The shell game of Southeast Asia

About this game

Congklak (Congkak in Malaysia, Sungka in the Philippines) is the carved-boat mancala of Southeast Asia: seven houses a side, seven shells in each, both players sowing at once to open. Sow one shell at a time, scoop on when you land on a full house, shoot the house opposite when you land in an empty one, and play again when you end in your storehouse. Nine hands-on lessons, five computer levels, a daily puzzle and pass-and-play. Burnt houses raise the stakes each round. No ads, works offline.

How to play

  1. New here? Tap Learn to play: nine short lessons where you make every move yourself.
  2. TAP a glowing house in your right-hand column to sow it. TAP anywhere while shells move to fast-forward.
  3. Shells go one to each place ahead, into your storehouse but never your opponent's.
  4. Last shell in your storehouse: play again. In a full house: scoop it up and keep sowing.
  5. Last shell in your own empty house: shoot, taking every shell in the house opposite.
  6. Each round starts with both players sowing at the same moment.
  7. A round ends when the player to move has no shells; houses that cannot be refilled are burnt shut.
  8. Undo takes back a move; Hint (3 per game) shows a good move and why.
