Hare and Hounds

One hare. Three hounds. One narrow board.

About this game

Hare and Hounds is a traditional hunt game for two sides on a tiny board of eleven points. Three hounds close in on one hare, but hounds may never move backward, so every step is a promise. Trap the hare before the hunt clock runs out, or slip past the hounds. Learn in nine hands-on lessons, play either side at four computer levels, take on a twelve-level campaign with stars, solve a new puzzle every day, or play a friend on one phone. Hand-painted animals, large text and reduced motion. An in-app Rules page covers it all. No ads, works offline.

How to play

  1. New here? Tap Learn to play: nine short lessons where you make every move yourself.
  2. One hare against three hounds. Tap a piece (its legal points glow), then tap where it goes. One step along a line per turn.
  3. Hounds win by leaving the hare no move. They never capture, and may never move backward, only forward or sideways.
  4. The hare wins by getting past all three hounds, or by lasting until the hunt clock (the hounds' moves) runs out.
  5. Move not allowed? The piece tries, comes back, and a message tells you why.
  6. Hare's reach shows where the hare could step next. Hint shows a good move (3 per game). Take back undoes your last move.
  7. The campaign has twelve hunts: fewer moves earn more stars. The daily puzzle is the same for all, longer on weekends.
  8. Beat each level with each side for a star. Winning unlocks new boards and a snowy set of pieces.
