Janggi: Korean Chess

Korean chess with a tutor

About this game

Janggi is Korean chess: two armies of carved octagonal pieces, each general guarded inside a palace with crossing diagonals, no river, and cannons that must jump a screen even to move. A tutor explains every piece, marks risky points and says why a suggested move is good. Choose your horse and elephant set-up, then play Cho or Han against five computer levels or a friend. Eleven hands-on lessons, passing, bikjang and counting included. Traditional characters or Western letters. No ads, works offline.

How to play

  1. New here? Eleven short lessons teach every move, or tap Auto Play to watch a free demo play itself (with Pause).
  2. Choose your set-up: inner, outer, left or right elephant. Cho (green) moves first and chooses first; Han (red) chooses after seeing it.
  3. TAP one of your pieces: it lifts and its legal points glow. Then TAP a glowing point, or DRAG the piece there.
  4. The tutor explains how the piece moves and rings the points where it could be lost. Think suggests a move and explains it (3 per game).
  5. Cannons must jump exactly one piece even to move, and never jump or capture a cannon. Palace diagonals: general, guards, chariots, cannons.
  6. Stuck? Pass. Facing generals (bikjang) must be broken, or called a draw. Two passes end the game and the pieces are counted.
  7. Attack the enemy general so it cannot escape: checkmate wins.
