Ludus Latrunculorum

Slide. Sandwich. Enclose the dux.

About this game

The Roman game of little soldiers on a marble board with pieces of bone and glass. Slide your soldiers like rooks, sandwich the other side's soldiers to take them, and enclose the enemy dux. A reconstructed game, with five opponent levels from Novice to Master, two players on one phone, Think with a plain-English reason, a short Learn course and Watch & Learn. No timers and no ads.

How to play

  1. Each side has 15 soldiers and a dux. Ivory moves first. Slide one piece a turn along its row or column over empty squares, like a rook.
  2. Sandwich an enemy soldier between two of your pieces, in a row or column, to take it. Moving between two enemies is safe.
  3. A soldier on an edge falls only along the edge; a corner soldier falls to the two squares beside it.
  4. The dux cannot be sandwiched: enclose it, every side held by you or the edge, and you win. No move left, or only a dux left, loses.
  5. Think shows a good move and why; Learn and Watch & Learn teach the ideas.
