Makruk: Thai Chess

The chess of Thailand, with a tutor beside you.

About this game

Makruk is Thailand's traditional chess: cowrie-shell pawns, a queen that steps one square, and endgames played against a count. Play five computer levels from Beginner to Master, learn in eight short lessons, watch two computers play with a think-and-reveal commentary, or share one phone. Think shows a strong move and why, and a live Count strip teaches the counting rules. Full rules inside, large text, no ads.

How to play

  1. New here? Tap Learn: eight short lessons where you make every move yourself.
  2. Tap a piece, then a lit square, or drag it. Dots are quiet moves and red rings are captures.
  3. Checkmate the other Khun to win. Gold moves first.
  4. A Bia (cowrie) steps forward and captures diagonally. On the sixth rank it becomes a Bia-ngai.
  5. When no Bia remain the counting rule starts. The Count strip shows the count, the limit and the moves left.
  6. Think shows a strong move and the reason. Threats rings your pieces that could be taken next.
  7. Watch & Learn plays a whole game between two computers: guess the move, then see it revealed. Pause any time.
