Nine Men's Morris

The mill game of Europe

About this game

Nine Men's Morris, known as Muhle in Germany, Moulin in France and Merels in England, is a medieval mill game carved into cloister seats across Europe. Place nine men on a 24-point board, slide them along the lines and take an enemy man with every row of three. Learn in ten hands-on lessons, watch a free Auto Play demonstration play a whole game for you, play five computer levels from Apprentice to Grandmaster, pass the phone to a friend, and solve a mill puzzle every day. Every rule is written out in full on the in-app Rules page. No ads, works offline.

How to play

  1. New here? Ten short lessons teach every move, or watch free Auto Play play a whole game for you.
  2. Placing: Light starts. Tap an empty point to place a man. Each side places nine.
  3. Sliding: tap a man, then a glowing point beside it (or drag it there). Men slide one step along a line.
  4. Three men in a row is a mill. Tap a glowing red enemy man to take it. Men in a mill are safe unless all enemy men are in mills.
  5. Down to three men? You fly: any man may jump to any empty point.
  6. You win when the enemy has two men left or cannot move. Same position 3 times, or 50 moves each with no mill, is a draw.
  7. A refused move shows a red ring and says why. Hint (3 per game) explains a good move. Undo takes back.
  8. Five levels, a daily mill puzzle, boards and men to earn. Large text and calm (reduced motion) options.
