Mū Tōrere

The eight-pointed star game of Aotearoa

About this game

Mū Tōrere is a traditional Māori board game of Aotearoa New Zealand. Four stones each sit on an eight-pointed star around a central pit, the putahi: slide one stone at a time and leave your opponent with no move. The game is tiny and fully solved, all traps and foresight. Learn in eight hands-on lessons, watch free Auto Play play a whole game for you, climb a Ladder of twelve opponents, solve a new proven puzzle daily, or play a friend on one phone. Carved-wood board, shell and greenstone stones, calm sound. An in-app Rules page spells out every move. No ads, works offline.

How to play

  1. New here? Eight short lessons teach every move, or watch free Auto Play play a whole game for you.
  2. TAP one of your stones (its legal points glow), then TAP a point. Or DRAG the stone there.
  3. A stone moves one step: to the next point around the star, or between the rim and the putahi (centre).
  4. A stone may enter the putahi only when it stands beside an enemy stone. From the putahi it may step to any empty point.
  5. You win when your opponent has no legal move. The same position three times is a draw.
  6. Move not allowed? The stone tries, comes back, and a message tells you why.
  7. Hint shows a good move and why (3 per game). Take back undoes your move and the reply.
  8. Climb the Ladder of 12 opponents. The last two cannot be beaten, only held to a draw.
