Toguz Kumalak

The nine-pebble game of the steppe

About this game

Toguz Kumalak is the traditional sowing game of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, part of the mancala family. Eighteen pits, 162 pebbles: lift a pit, sow round the board, capture pits your last pebble makes even, and win one opponent pit for good as your tuz. Learn in ten short hands-on lessons, play the computer at five levels, pass the phone to a friend, and solve a new puzzle every day. An in-app Rules page covers every rule in full. Carved wood, felt and kilim-pattern art, large text and reduced-motion options. No ads, works offline.

How to play

  1. New here? Tap Learn to play: ten short lessons where you make every move yourself.
  2. TAP one of your pits on the bottom row. Glowing pits are the ones you can play.
  3. The first pebble stays in the pit; the rest go one per pit, counter-clockwise.
  4. If your last pebble lands in an opponent pit and makes it even, you capture it.
  5. If it makes exactly three, that pit becomes your tuz: every pebble landing there is yours.
  6. One tuz each; never the opponent's 9th pit, never the same number as their tuz.
  7. First to collect 82 of the 162 pebbles wins. Undo takes back a move; Hint shows why.
  8. Daily puzzle: TAP the one pit that takes the most pebbles.
