Yut Nori

Korea's four-stick race

About this game

Throw four carved sticks and race your horse tokens round a paper board on a woven mat. Yut Nori is the traditional Korean game: yut and mo earn extra throws, corner shortcuts cut across the board, tokens stack to travel as one, and landing on a rival sends it back to the start. Learn in ten hands-on lessons, play a cautious, balanced or aggressive computer team, pass the phone between two teams, and try a new daily challenge. Hand-drawn art, sound, large text and reduced motion. No ads, works offline.

How to play

  1. New here? Tap Learn to play: ten short lessons where you make every move yourself.
  2. TAP the felt pad, or SWIPE up on it, to throw the four sticks. Flat sides up: 1 do, 2 gae, 3 geol, 4 yut, none mo (5).
  3. Yut, mo and every capture earn another throw. Throws are kept and spent in any order: TAP a throw chip to choose one.
  4. TAP a token, then TAP a glowing point to move. A token starting on a corner may take the diagonal shortcut.
  5. Land on your own token to stack them; land on a rival to capture it and send it back to the start.
  6. Back-do (the marked stick alone) moves a token one step back. Refused taps always tell you why.
  7. Bring all four tokens home first to win. Hints, take back, five computer levels and a daily challenge help you learn.
  8. Keyboard: Space throws, arrows pick token and point, Tab chooses a throw, H hint, U take back.
