potassium
Potassium
K⁺, atomic number 19. Principal intracellular cation (140 mmol/L cytosol vs. 3.5–5.0 mmol/L plasma). K⁺ efflux through Kv/Kir channels repolarises action potentials and sets resting membrane potential. Hypokalaemia prolongs QT and predisposes to torsades de pointes.
