Mesenchymal spindle-shaped cells that synthesise and remodel extracellular matrix (collagen I/III, fibronectin, elastin). Activated by TGF-β1 to become contractile myofibroblasts (α-SMA+). Central to wound healing, organ fibrosis, and tumour stroma.
