Glycopeptide antibiotic; binds D-Ala-D-Ala terminus of peptidoglycan precursors → steric inhibition of cell wall synthesis. Essential for MRSA, VRE (with D-Ala-D-Lac resistance), and severe gram-positive infections. First-line IV MRSA bacteremia. 1952 discovery.
