About

The macro companion to PlainMoney.

Why this exists

Individuals and populations of individuals shape the global monetary system — spending, saving, borrowing, remittances, capital flight, adoption of alternative monies. And the system shapes right back — inflation, interest rates, exchange-rate moves, capital controls, currency crises, sanctions all land on an individual's wallet. Global Monetary Systems exists to make that whole bidirectional machine legible: history, present mechanics, and the design space for what could come next.

It's deliberately not the "lite" version of anything. The same pages are built to hold up for three audiences at once:

One page, three depths

No tab or section is ever labeled "professional," "professor," "student," or "general public" — that reads as naive and forces a reader to self-classify. Instead, every topic starts at Essentials, a short page useful to anyone, and opens deeper into Applied (the actual mechanism, how practitioners use it, worked examples) and Research (formal models, the literature, data methodology) through stacked in-app windows — never a menu you pick your identity from.

Global Monetary Systems Pro

Essentials is free, on every page, permanently. Global Monetary Systems Pro is one subscription — $9.99/month, no free trial — that unlocks the Applied and Research layers everywhere in the app: the mechanism-level detail practitioners and policymakers use, and the formal models and literature a graduate program assigns. There's exactly one product; nothing is metered or tiered beyond that.

Live data, with no backend

Global Monetary Systems has no server and never will — there's no company-run pipeline sitting between you and the data. Instead, the app itself fetches free, keyless, official APIs directly from your device: the European Central Bank, the World Bank, and the Bank for International Settlements, with an optional bring-your-own-key connection to FRED for Federal Reserve series. Refresh happens only when you tap "Refresh now," or via an opt-in Auto-sync that's off by default. The Signals page on this site shows a periodic snapshot of the same data — the app is where it's actually live.

Ask a model — entirely on your phone

The bundled content, however large it grows, will never be complete — so the app lets you ask anything, answered by a language model that runs on your phone, not in the cloud. You pick the model from every option that fits your device; the app grounds its answers in the app's own sourced pages and tells you exactly which pages it used, or says plainly "the book doesn't cover this" when it doesn't know. Nothing you ask, and nothing the model answers, ever leaves your device.

Sourcing — no source, no claim

Every factual claim, number, or description of a mechanism is sourced, in a fixed authority order:

Every citation is its own tappable element — never a bare footnote — and opens in-app at full width, 85% height, returning you to exactly where you were.

Explains, never advises

The app teaches cause-and-effect chains and what has historically followed a given kind of event, sourced, with the spread of outcomes — never what to buy, sell, or invest in. That line holds for every reader, from a first-time learner to a sitting central bank governor.

Private by design

No accounts, no bank linking, no ads, no analytics. The only network activity is data you choose to refresh, citations you choose to tap, and a one-time model download if you turn on the on-device AI. Full detail in the privacy policy.
