Primary lymphoid organ in the mediastinum. Site of T lymphocyte maturation: bone-marrow-derived progenitors undergo positive selection (MHC restriction) in the cortex, negative selection (self-tolerance) in the medulla. Involutes after puberty; ~70% reduction by age 45.
