Get help with PlainMoney — an offline, plain-language personal-finance literacy app.
PlainMoney is a plain-language, fully offline personal-finance literacy app for iOS and Android. It covers budgeting (a 50/30/20 tool and spending/bill tracking), debt payoff and minimum-payment traps, saving goals and an emergency-fund calculator, a paycheck decoder and federal tax estimator, a savings-growth projector with real index-fund/bond/T-Bill historical returns, and a whole free Safety Net (scam patterns, coercive-control and elder-exploitation signs, benefits, and disaster recovery). It's 100% on-device, works fully offline, and explains how money works without ever telling you what to buy, sell, or invest in.
Yes, on both platforms — download PlainMoney on the App Store for iPhone and iPad, or get it on Google Play for Android.
Only if you turn it on. "Enable AI/SI/LLM" sits under the Ask box on Today and is off by default. When you switch it on and choose a model, the app downloads that model once and then answers your questions on your phone, grounded in PlainMoney's own guides. Nothing you type is ever sent anywhere, and every part of the app works with it off. Safety content never depends on it.
Yes — completely. Every calculator, guide, and tool works fully offline. The only thing that ever talks to the network is an optional exchange-rate refresh (European Central Bank + UN Treasury, a plain public file with nothing personal attached) that you can turn off at any time in Manage.
Yes. PlainMoney has no account, no login, and no company-run server. Your paycheck, spending, bills, and every calculator's numbers are stored only in a local database on your device and are never uploaded anywhere. Manage > Your data > Delete everything clears all of it, in one step, at any time. See our Privacy Policy for details.
No, and it never will — that's a hard rule for this app, not just a current limitation. Every number in PlainMoney is one you type in yourself; there is no bank-linking, no OAuth, and no credential entry of any kind.
No. PlainMoney explains how money concepts and calculations work — it never tells you what to buy, sell, pay first, borrow, or invest in. Every tool and guide ends with a plain "this explains, it doesn't advise" line. It's not a substitute for a licensed financial advisor, accountant, or attorney.
Everyday-use tools (the 50/30/20 budget, spending and bill tracking, debt-payoff and minimum-payment tools, the savings-growth projector, the paycheck decoder, and the entire Safety Net) are free, permanently — Safety content is never gated, by design. PlainMoney Pro is an optional subscription that unlocks specialized planning tools and guides for situations most people hit only occasionally (net worth, loan comparison, cost-of-living moves, and more).
You enter your real income, savings rate, and an allocation across index funds, bonds, T-Bills, and any individual stocks/other. Index-fund, bond, and T-Bill returns come from a real, cited long-run historical dataset (NYU Stern/Damodaran, 1928–2025) — not an invented number. Individual stocks have no such reliable average, so that share only uses whatever return you type in yourself.
Yes. Pick an existing receipt photo through your device's system photo picker and PlainMoney reads the amount on-device; or speak the amount out loud using on-device speech recognition. Neither the photo nor the audio ever leaves your phone.
Every country converts from day one. Your own numbers always stay in your chosen home currency; a separate "viewing as" lens converts what you see into another country's currency using the European Central Bank (daily) or UN Treasury (monthly) rates, or a rate you set yourself.
The everyday-use core and the entire Safety Net are free, with no ads. PlainMoney Pro is an optional subscription for specialized planning tools — see Manage in the app for current pricing.
