PlainScam is provided by EqualInformation, LLC. PlainScam is a plain-language, pattern-recognition and education app that helps you recognize common scam tactics — over 1,100 free and Pro guides, real-time decision-support tools, and a fully offline, on-device library.

This Privacy Policy applies to the PlainScam app (iOS bundle identifier: com.equalinformation.plainscam.app; Android package name: com.equalinformation.plainscam.app), available on the App Store and Google Play.
Nothing. PlainScam does not require an account and does not collect your name, email, location, contacts, photos, or any other personal information. It does not use analytics or advertising SDKs of any kind.
Depending on how you use the app, PlainScam may store the following locally, never transmitting it:
All of it lives only in a local database on your device. It is never uploaded anywhere, and we have no way to see it. Settings > Delete All My Data clears all of it, in one step, at any time.
If you turn on Automatic Background Sync in Settings (or tap Sync Now), the app periodically checks a public, read-only file for updated guide content and downloads it if newer. This is a plain file download — no account and no personal data of any kind is sent with the request, only a request for a static file. You can turn this off at any time in Settings, and the app works fully offline either way.
Every guide lists its real sources — the government agencies and organizations (FTC, FBI, CISA, IRS, and others, depending on topic) whose published guidance the guide is consistent with. Tapping one opens that organization's own official page in an in-app browser, so you never fully leave the guide you were reading. That page is loaded directly from the organization's own website, subject to that organization's own privacy policy, not ours — PlainScam doesn't see or log which sources you open.
If you set up a reminder (from a guide, or from the unified Notification Preferences screen), it is scheduled and delivered entirely by your device's own operating system. No reminder content ever leaves your device.
PlainScam's core library, decision trees, quizzes, checklists, scorers, and tools (including its pattern-checker and numeracy gut-check tools) all run entirely on-device. There is no account, no company-run server, and no user tracking.
PlainScam does not use any analytics SDKs, crash reporters, advertising SDKs, or tracking tools. No data is sent to third-party analytics services.
PlainScam is an educational, pattern-recognition tool that helps you learn to recognize common scam tactics. It is not a substitute for professional legal, financial, or law-enforcement advice, and it cannot detect fraud on your actual accounts, calls, or messages — it never has access to them. It never monitors your real accounts, calls, or messages, and never stores or transmits your personal financial data.
PlainScam does not request access to your microphone, location, or contacts. It does request Camera and Photo Library access, used only by the Live Scam Scanner tool to recognize text and QR codes in a photo or through the camera in real time, entirely on-device — no image, video, or recognized text is ever stored beyond the moment you're viewing the result, or transmitted anywhere. On Android, PlainScam also requests the "query all packages" permission, used only by the App Risk Review and Hidden Monitoring Check tools to read which permissions your other installed apps have declared, entirely on-device, so it can flag patterns associated with real banking-trojan malware or hidden tracking apps — this list is never transmitted or stored beyond the check itself. On Android, it also requests Internet and Network State (for the optional content sync above) and Notifications (for reminders you turn on yourself).
PlainScam's core guides and tools are free. PlainScam Pro is an optional subscription that unlocks specialized-depth modules (crypto, investment, banking, romance, and business fraud, among others). If you subscribe, your payment is handled entirely by Apple or Google. We never see or store your payment details — we only receive confirmation from the App Store or Google Play that an active subscription exists.
EqualInformation, LLC does not sell personal or sensitive user data. We do not share users' data with data brokers or for advertising purposes. The company does not intentionally transmit personal or sensitive PlainScam user data to its own servers or unrelated third parties.
Settings > Delete All My Data removes your bookmarks, personal logs, checklist progress, saved cards, reminders, and recently-viewed list — complete and immediate, since all of it lives only on your device. Uninstalling PlainScam removes all locally stored data. Neither action affects the bundled guide library itself, which simply reinstalls with the app.
PlainScam is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone.
If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be included in the app and posted here, with the Effective Date above revised.
