App Support — PlainSpeak

Get help with PlainSpeak — an offline speech, text, and camera translation app.

PlainSpeak is an offline-first speech, text, and camera translation app for iOS and Android. It translates conversation, typed text, signs, menus, and documents entirely on-device — two-person conversation mode, live camera overlay, offline language packs, emergency and medical alert phrases, and a currency & unit converter for daily travel use. It works with no signal, is 100% on-device with no account required, no servers, and no tracking, and it carries no ads on any tier. PlainSpeak is live now on Google Play, with the App Store version currently in review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PlainSpeak available yet?

Yes on Android — download PlainSpeak on Google Play now. The iOS version has been submitted and is currently in review with the App Store — check back here for the download link once it's approved.

Does PlainSpeak work without internet?

Yes — completely. Voice translation, text translation, camera translation, conversation mode, and every emergency, medical, legal-rights, and accessibility feature work fully offline once a language pack is downloaded. There is no network on any critical path, because a language barrier hits hardest exactly where connectivity is scarce.

Is my data private?

Yes. PlainSpeak is 100% on-device with no account required, no servers, no cloud sync, no analytics, and no tracking. Speech and text you translate are processed entirely on your phone and are never sent anywhere. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Can I trust the translations for something important, like a medical or legal situation?

PlainSpeak flags translations it's not confident about rather than presenting them as certain, and it's built specifically for high-stakes moments — immigration interviews, medical visits, legal proceedings. That said, it is a communication aid, not a replacement for a professional human interpreter in high-stakes situations. In a medical or safety emergency, always contact local emergency services directly.

Is PlainSpeak really free?

The core of PlainSpeak is free, permanently: voice, text, and two-person conversation translation; emergency, medical alert, and legal-rights phrase packs; and every accessibility feature. An optional PlainSpeak Pro subscription unlocks convenience features like live camera overlay translation, unlimited offline language packs, and group conversation mode — but nothing that keeps you safe or understood is ever behind a paywall.

What is camera translation, and does it need internet?

Point your camera at a sign, menu, or document and PlainSpeak translates it in place, entirely on-device. Snap-and-translate is free; live, real-time AR overlay translation is a PlainSpeak Pro feature. Neither requires an internet connection.

What are the emergency and medical alert phrases?

PlainSpeak includes a free, always-accessible set of emergency phrases ("I need police," "I'm lost," "call an ambulance"), a customizable medical alert card (allergies, medications, blood type) for instant display to a responder, and legal-rights phrases relevant to immigration and detention contexts. These are free forever, with no exceptions, and reachable in one tap from anywhere in the app.

What accessibility features does PlainSpeak include?

A sign-language basics reference, a text-first conversation mode for deaf and hard-of-hearing users, large-text and high-contrast display, adjustable text-to-speech rate, low-literacy icon-assisted phrases, and haptic feedback for incoming translated speech — all free, permanently.

How do offline language packs work?

Download the language packs you need before you go. Once a pack is on your phone, translation for that language works with zero connectivity. The free tier keeps a limited number of packs active at a time (you can swap freely); PlainSpeak Pro removes that limit.

The app is crashing or not loading. What should I do?

Try these steps:
1. Force-close and reopen the app.
2. Restart your device.
3. Make sure you are running the latest version from the App Store or Google Play.
4. If the issue persists, contact us (see below) with your device model, OS version, and a description of the problem.
